South of the Van Mijenfjord is the fjord Van Keulen. The plan was to go there today. For the first 20 km we followed Van Mijenfjorden, then turned south into a valley that would take us up over a glacier and then down to the next fjord.
It was snowing on and off, the visibility wasn't that good. We crossed over some ice covered with a bit of snow, solid and no problem to pass over. Next time we crossed over the ice it broke and the dogs got a bit wet. The sledge passed over what occurred to be not just a little bit of water, but the stream running down the valley. Obviously the ice wasn't very thick at all. After a while and some more crossings we reached the moraine under the glacier. The natural way up was now open water where the stream from the glacier was coming down. We worked our way up along the side of the moraine but ended up quite high up on the mountainside. With the visibility being quite poor I decided to turn back, no Van Keulen for us!
To avoid to cross the stream on the way back down the valley I tried another way. But when we just had some hundred meters left to the fjord we couldn't get through that way. So we went back the whole way to the moraine under the glacier, crossed the stream where it still was small and then carefully went back along our old tracks. It was nice to reach the fjord ice, after some hours up and down the valley. We crossed over it, took some height before stopping for the evening. Looking down on the fjord I could see that the ice didn't continue that much further. Instead the ice was scattered, drifting around in the opened water.
