2011-05-16 En knäckt skida och sårad stolthet Today the plan was to go back to the Van Mijenfjord. The first part was easy, working our way up over the glacier and then softly down the next glacier. The tricky part was when we reached the moraine to get down on the fjord ice. It is not much snow in the moraine and the snow can be very soft as it is mixed with a lot of sand etc which makes the heat from the sun warm it up and melt it easier. Crossing a quite steep slope with snow like sugar was a bit too much, the sledge lost its grip and started sliding down sideways, then hitting some harder snow so it fell over. I hold on to it, thinking don't drop it, then you never know when you'll see the dogs again! After a little while the sledge stopped and I could turn it the right way. We got down on the fjord ice and I checked if everything was OK: dogs were good, I was OK but one of my skies that were attached on the sledge was broken and some minor parts on a camera.
I'm used to the pulkas loosing grip and twisting around when crossing slopes, new experience when standing on a sledge! The rest of today's trip was over thick, nice fjord ice.
