Wijdefjorden ends in Austfjorden, that in the south meet the Mittag-Leffler glacier. On the map it is marked where the glacier front was 1961 and 1986, today the glacier has drawn back further.
We skied about 12 km over Austfjordens ice before we reached the glacier. It was a beautiful day, but a biting cold wind from the south. I found a quite wind protected spot for lunch, but as we sat there the clouds suddenly turned up from the north, soon starting to cover the whole sky. It changes quickly!
We worked our way up the glacier. Some parts of the glacier the turquose-blue ice is showing, dramatic and cracked into interesting formations packed together in a slowly moving frozen river heading for the fjord. Other parts of the glacier is flatter and possible to ski over.
In the evening when the snowfall increased I started to put up the tent. Suddenly I heard the sound of snow mobiles. When I turned around to look I wasn't sure if I was halucinating, working their way up over the glacier was two snow mobiles pulling a boat much bigger than themselves. Not what you expect to see on a glacier!
